Churchdown is one of the most desirable comprehensives in the area. It's a nice choice to have!
Reality is a bright kid will achieve well wherever and Marling has a lot of bright kids so I would be more surprised if they were not getting good GCSE results.
The options from Churchdown as I see it are a bus into Gloucester then either a bus or train to Stroud; or connecting up somehow with the 66 which runs from Shurdington to Stroud (I don't know how feasible it is from where you are). There is a private minibus at £9 per day which does Shurdington - Abbeydale-Marling but my daughter was on this and lost her place as they didn't have enough drivers. But it would be an awfully long day.
I have a kid at grammar and a kid at a comp (qualified but didn't rank high enough). Both are thriving and both schools are pushing the kids to their potential.
