Start at birth.

Talk to your baby. Read to your baby. Teach your baby the sounds and shapes and numbers and when they’re three and a half or thereabouts teach them to read.

Then take an active interest in their education for the first 5-and-a-half years of school, and get them to read lots of books and listen to audiobooks. Encourage them to learn an instrument. Times tables cds in the car on the way to school in Y3 and Y4 if you can stand them.

Halfway through Y5 familiarise them with 11+ practice material. Use an online platform like Atom if you think that’ll work for your child, or a tutor, or just work through books at home. In the summer holidays do a practice test every week. Towards the end of August do a little more.

Give your child something to look forward to after the test and make sure they know that it’s just about having a wider choice of schools and that there are other good options apart from the grammars.
